The Kings of Mykonos: It’s A Wog Life After All for Nick Giannopoulos! in Athens, Greece
In the 1960’s, movies like Jules Dassin’s Never On Sunday and Melina Mercouri’s part as Ilya introduced the world with some of Greece’s beauties. This summer, The Kings of Mykonos: Wog Boy 2 is the movie which aims to advertise Greece abroad. It is the sequel of high grossing comedy The Wog Boy (2000).
The story is based on the well-known island of Mykonos. It is about Steve Karamitsis, also known as ‘The Wog Boy’. Steve inherits a tavern and a beach on the island of Mykonos from an uncle he has never met in his life. Steve will of course go to Mykonos –who would say no to their own private beach after all. He travels to Mykonos with his friend, only to see that things are quite different to what he had expected...
In the movie, stars Greek-Australian comedian Nick Giannopoulos and Greek beauty Zeta Makrypoulia. Charming Greek-Australian actor Alex Dimitriadis co-stars. The movie is formed by a multicultural cast, mostly of Greek-Australian, Australian, Greek and American actors. Director of The Kings of Mykonos is Greek-Australian TV director and producer Peter Andrikidis. Mostly known for his work on the drama series G.P., the comedy/drama series Grass Roots and The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant among others, Andrikidis has also gained many awards for his work.
Nick Giannopoulos is very excited about his latest movie, as it gave him the chance to make a dream of his come true. He always dreamt of making a movie in Greece, his country of origin. Giannopoulos also claims to be an admirer of Zeta Makrypoulia. He said about her, “she is very talented. I hope she goes to Hollywood. I’m positive that she will make it there. The camera –like men- loves her. She is astonishing and mysterious in front of the camera. And, her English is much better than she thinks.” Ray Martin, the host of popular Australian TV show 60 minutes, introduced Zeta as Greece’s answer to Nicole Kidman.
One thing is for sure; The Kings of Mykonos will not only entertain both Greeks and non-Greeks this summer, but will also introduce Nick Giannopoulos to Greece again, after his guest appearance on the popular Greek comedy TV series Eisai to Tairi Mou in 2001. The Kings of Mykonos will take you on a journey on the most vibrant island of Cyclades and will give you the opportunity to enjoy the Greek summer –at least until the lights in the movie theatre are on again.
The movie premiered in Australia on the 20th of May. Its Greek premiere is set for the 3rd of June.
