New MA in Modern Greek Studies at King’s College in London
This is a one-year taught programme which offers the opportunity for in-depth study in any one of three disciplines: history, literature, or sociolinguistics, or in an interdisciplinary combination, all with specific reference to Greece and the Greek-speaking world, and concentrating chiefly on the last two centuries.
It is the only programme in the UK, and one of the few in the world, that provides this level of teaching in the field of Modern Greek studies within a one-year format. King’s College’s Maughan Library houses the premier collection of Greek publications in the UK; additional unique facilities for
research in these fields are available at the the British
Library the National Archives, and, at
King’s College itself, the Centre for Language, Discourse &
Communication and the Centre
for Hellenic Studies .
From 2009 the programme allows students to specialise formally in any one of its four discipline-based pathways. The MA Modern Greek Studies now leads to any one of the following degrees:
MA Modern Greek Studies:
history
MA Modern Greek Studies:
literature
MA Modern Greek Studies:
sociolinguistics
MA Modern Greek Studies:
interdisciplinary
Modern Greek language is offered as an associated skill where necessary. The program in all its pathways offers students the possibility to prepare for further academic research, but it is also a coherent and stimulating
program for those who do not wish to proceed further.
*Entry requirements*
You must possess an Upper Second degree from a UK university, or a GPA of 7.5 from a university in Greece or Cyprus, or an equivalent qualification. A BA in any Arts and Humanities subject is an appropriate qualification
provided a) that it falls within one of the disciplines listed above and b) includes or is accompanied by some previous subject-specific study in the field. For all students, a competent working knowledge of Modern Greek is
required.
If your first language is not English, you must satisfy the current requirements of the School of Arts and Humanities, which can be found at
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/graduate/apply/lang.html
*Application procedure*
It is possible to apply online via the College’s Graduate Study webpages.
You should include a brief statement of your reasons for applying for this programme, and if this is not evident from the title of your first degree, the extent of your knowledge of Modern Greek studies in your discipline and your competence in Modern Greek. If we are in doubt about your suitability for the programme we will invite you for interview, if practicable (it is sometimes possible to hold interviews in Greece or Cyprus), or ask you to respond by email or phone interview to a number of questions. You should also take the opportunity to ask any questions of us that you may have. We try to respond to all applications quickly.
*Deadlines*
There is no fixed deadline for applying for these programmes, although in practice if you apply later than early May you will reduce your chances of being accepted and you will be too late to take advantage of arrangements
for accommodation made through the Accommodation Office or to enrol for the Pre-Sessional English course. If you are applying for funding there are much earlier deadlines, dependent on the particular source of funding applied for.
*Funding*
There are opportunities for funding offered by the
Collegeand
specific to these programmes
of study .
