AHEPA Displeased with Management of Greek Independence Day Event at White House in DC
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National President of the largest and oldest Greek heritage grass roots association sent a letter yesterday to President Barack Obama today expressing displeasure over the management of Greek Independence Day celebration at The White House held March 25, 2009.
"Despite proactive outreach to the White House, and several attempts to offer AHEPA's resources to your Public Liaison Office, many integral people involved in our leadership, including the National Presidents of our junior auxiliaries, were left off of the invitation list for the March 25th festivities," wrote Ike Gulas, National President of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading membership-based organization for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and Philhellenes. "Therefore, I feel it is my duty to call to your attention this failure to recognize AHEPA's status in the Greek American community and to treat it accordingly."
In addition, Gulas cited the lateness with which electronic invites were issued, making it difficult for invitees to travel to Washington at such late notice, and questioned the overall vetting process of the invites.
Gulas requested a meeting to discuss ways in which AHEPA and the new administration can work together to better the lives of Greek-Americans and the nation.
AHEPA President, Archbishop Discuss Issue
Today, Gulas and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, spoke via conference call to discuss the matter. Both leaders agreed that several important community-service leaders were not extended invitations, and discussed how such oversights can be avoided in the future.

I may have the answer: You need to read the book “Not Out Of Africa: How Afrocentrism Became an Excuse to Teach Myth as History” ISBN: 046509838X by Mary Lefkowitz. On the back it states: “[this book] has sparked widespread debate over the teaching of revisionist history in schools and colleges. Was Socrates black? Did Aristotle steal his ideas from the library of Alexandria? Do we owe the underlying tenets of our democratic civilization to the Africans? Mary Lefkowitz explains why politically motivated histories of the ancient world are being written and shows how Afrocentrist claims blatantly contradict the historical evidence…” Afrocetnrism is a tenet of insidious political correctness and Obama used it to help him win the election. Obama, who basically rejects his whiteness, probably believes Greeks stole their democratic foundational philosophy from Black Africans even though there is no historical evidence for this. Hence, the White House’s cold shoulder to the Greeks. His 20 year membership in a racist black liberation theology (BLT) cult church most definitely taught this false revisionist history. Both Afrocentrism & BLT also teach that blacks are the true Jews while whites (which includes Greeks) and Jews in Israel are really cursed Edomites needing destruction. Obama, therefore, is probably using subterfuge & stealth as a dangerous revolutionary leader for racist anti-whitey pro-socialism heretical black liberation theology.
Commenter JJ above, so I suppose yo think Reagan, George Bush Senior, and George W. Bush were all subscribers to Afrocentrist models as well, and that this caused all of them — just like Obama — to focus more on the Archdiocese, some of the heavy contributors.
Reagan and Bush Sr. invited Iakovos, Andy Athens and Alex Spanos and no one, zero, from AHEPA on several Greek Independence day at the White House celebrations. AHEPA got little attention after Carter and didn’t get it again until Clinton at these events.
So get your facts straight. AHEPA getting attention, whether in these public events, or more importantly in having its policy advice and interests taken seriously, reflects AHEPA’s level of activity in Washington, no more no less, and nothing else.
I started workign on the Hill in 1991. I used to hear from AHEPA once a month or more. I haven’t heard from them in ten years. Not a peep. And I handle Foreign Relations in a Senate office.
